Complete fact/sf history

FACT/SF, founded by Artistic Director Charles Slender-White in 2008, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dance company that contributes directly to the artistic and intellectual wealth of the San Francisco Bay Area.  FACT/SF’s primary mission is to create aesthetically sophisticated and rigorously crafted performance events that encourage viewers to feel intensely, think critically, and broaden their perspectives.  With work steeped in the traditions of dance-theatre, postmodern performance, and contemporary ballet, FACT/SF believes that by providing artists and administrators with jobs and performing frequently for diverse audiences, we increase the visibility and viability of the performing arts, stretching its boundaries and ensuring its survival.

Described in the San Francisco Bay Guardian as “deep, slightly dark and always thought-provoking”, our work has been commissioned by the United States Department of State, ODC Theater, the Chelyabinsk State Pedagogical UniversityCounterPulseElectric Works Gallery, and the College Preparatory School.  We have been curated into ODC's Walking Distance Dance Festival, SleepNod's Out of Nowhere (Seattle, WA), the San Francisco International Arts FestivalKeith Hennessy’s Queer Performance Marathon, CSU East Bay’s Queer Dance Festival, ODC’s Pilot 57 & 59,Alembic Series #12 (Portland, OR), the Isadora Dance Festival (Krasnoyarsk, Russia), and others, with residencies at CounterPulse, Derida Dance (Sofia, Bulgaria), Mama Calizo’s Voice Factory, and The Garage.  In 2009, we toured to each of the 173 WalMarts in California, bringing our work to over 7000 people throughout the state.  In 2012, we completed a 7-week, 8-city Trans-Siberian Russian Tour. Since 2008, FACT/SF has premiered 33 works in 167 local performances for over thousands of Bay Area residents.

Additionally, FACT/SF has received significant support from the US Department of State, the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, Movement ResearchCA$H Grants, the Lighting Artists in Dance AwardsColour DropPerkins Coie, and individual donors.
