DETOUR-19

DETOUR-19 is FACT/SF’s creative response to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the shelter-in-place protocols are both important and necessary, they can also significantly disrupt our sense of belonging and connectedness. With community at the heart of all we do, FACT/SF has devised a set of more than19 engagement opportunities to help bring us together a bit more.

Between March 23 and May 8, we will:

  • Host 3 virtual Happy Hours

  • Offer 15 Countertechnique classes

  • Create and share 1 dance film, DETOUR-19a, of site-specific choreography (adapted from our postponed premiere of Loop)

  • Create and share 1 new dance film, DETOUR-19b, featuring submissions from you!

  • And more!

Please read on to learn about our programming context, how you can support us during this chaotic time, our new creative project, and our complete schedule of events.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Context

Like many performing arts groups, FACT/SF has had to cancel our in-person spring programming. Significantly, this included a Countertechnique workshop in Vancouver (March), a gala fundraiser (April), and the world premiere of Loop (May). Altogether, these three events would have generated $38,900 in projected revenue. To put that number into perspective, it’s about 40% of our annual budget.

Despite this enormous challenge, FACT/SF remains committed to honoring our dancers’ contracts. The FACT/SF dancers have each already lost a significant amount of work and projected income from other cancelled engagements, and we’re doing what we can to ameliorate those losses. In addition to supporting our core artists, FACT/SF is also continuing to provide important services to our fiscal sponsees, consulting clients, co-production grant recipients, students, and many others throughout the field.

support

As of May 4, 59 different households have already generously donated to help us continue our work. Collectively, they’ve given $14,125 towards our $25,000 goal. These significant contributions will help FACT/SF weather this storm.

If you have the capacity to donate, please click here.

If you have any questions about how your donation will be utilized, please email Charles Slender-White directly at cslender@factsf.org.

DETOUR-19b is a dance film by FACT/SF that utilizes video submissions from the public as creative catalyst. The film will premiere at the FACT/SF Happy Hour on May 8.

Between March 31 and April 10, participants sent FACT/SF 9-second video featuring them sheltering in place. Artistic Director Slender-White is currently in the process of giving the FACT/SF dancers prompts for responding to these videos. Together, the original submissions and the dancers’ responses will be assembled into a short dance film that documents and reflects upon this particular moment in time.
